A regional strike has been called in the Cibao region for Monday, April 24 to protest rising costs of food, medicine, cooking gas, gasoline and all related products.
Osvaldo Brito, leader of the People’s Broad Struggle Front (FLUP), declared: «The Cibao strike will take place this Monday, April 24, employing all forms of protest and mobilization. We demand protection for national industry, environmental conservation, reliable access to clean water, and essential community works like aqueducts, hospitals, schools, sidewalks and curbs. We oppose water privatization, the construction of the La Placeta and Boca de los Ríos hydroelectric plants in Santiago Rodríguez province, and demand a proper social security system.»
Protest organizers are calling for:
-
Shutdown of free trade zones, businesses, industries, markets, commercial centers and banks
-
Suspension of cargo and passenger transportation
-
Closure of all schools, high schools, universities and colleges
-
Workers to stay home from their jobs
Brito added: «The Cibao strike has the support of key productive sectors including transportation workers, rice farmers, pork and poultry producers, vegetable growers, meat producers and other regional farmers. While the government provides economic subsidies to big bankers and oligarchs, small and medium producers are being driven to bankruptcy.»
