All public transportation units will register new fare prices. According to a statement from the Federation of Passenger Transporters of the Southern Region (FETRAPASUR), the adjustment will be as follows:
For express buses («guaguas expreso»), the price will be 120 pesos per person, and 110 for students. Meanwhile, for regular buses («guaguas calientes»), the fare will cost 100 pesos per person and 100 for students.
The directive also highlights that the fare for the Piedra Blanca-Santo Domingo route would be fifty pesos; likewise, from Piedra Blanca to San Cristóbal. Passengers on urban routes would pay 25 to 35 pesos.
The transporters from San Cristóbal justify the new rates based on operating costs, which they say have become unsustainable for both Route A and B. These routes have been operating daily and maintaining distancing protocols, allowing only 60 percent of their capacity. They say they have been forced to make this adjustment to avoid the total collapse of their small businesses.
Even though this measure was initially taken during the 2020 pandemic, the fare prices remained the same. Now, they are operating at 100% capacity, but it appears the transporters have no one controlling the fares. This is evident as the fare from Baní to Santo Domingo costs between 150 and 175 pesos, despite there being a significant difference in kilometers between Baní and San Cristóbal.
