Haitians rank first among foreign buyers of real estate in the Dominican Republic, and 95% of them lack legal immigration status in the country.
This was reported by the Vice Minister of Migration and Naturalization of the Ministry of Interior and Police, Juan Manuel Rosario, who stated that Haitians displaced Americans from the top position as real estate buyers and pushed Canadians to third place.
«95% of Haitian real estate buyers during the January-June period do not have regular immigration status in the country, as they are in transit, not residents, and lack permanent status,» he stated in an interview with journalist Federico Méndez on the program Esferas de Poder.
Additionally, the Director of Migration Affairs of the Vice Ministry of Management and Naturalization of the Ministry of Interior and Police, Laura Maríñez, added that during the January-June period of this year, foreign nationals acquired 160 real estate properties in the country, with a total value exceeding RD$1 billion.
A large number of Haitians are moving to the Dominican Republic.
A total of 187 foreigners acquired 160 properties in the Dominican Republic during the first six months of 2023, with 93 percent being in transit or non-resident status.
Other foreigners who have purchased properties in the Dominican territory include natives of Italy, with 24 properties, accounting for 12.83 percent; France, with 15, or 8.02 percent; Canada, with 10, or 5.34 percent; Venezuela, with 7, or 3.74 percent; Russia, with 7, or 3.74 percent. Nationals from 33 other unspecified countries acquired the remaining 60 properties, corresponding to 32 percent.
«In the first half of the year, the United States ranks second, and Haiti ranks first,» stated Mariñez, the head of the Migration department.
